Control What Cou Can. Let Go Of What You Can't.
You don't control everything that happens to you. But you can control your thoughts, decisions, actions, and response. Learn how to let go of what you can't change and act on what you can.
You don't control everything that happens to you. But you always have a choice in what you do next.
Life will constantly give you situations you didn't ask for.
A bad day.
A difficult conversation.
A mistake.
A setback.
Something you can't change.
The first step isn't to react.
It's to pause.
Identify the emotion you're feeling.
Anger.
Frustration.
Fear.
Disappointment.
Stress.
Name it.
Because you can't manage what you refuse to acknowledge.
Then ask yourself:
“Is this actually in my control?”
If the answer is no…
Accept what happened.
You don't have to like it.
You don't have to agree with it.
You simply stop wasting energy trying to change something you cannot change.
Then bring your attention back to what is in your hands.
Your thoughts.
Your actions.
Your decisions.
Your response.
Your next move.
But if the answer is yes…
Don't stay stuck in the emotion.
Solve the problem.
Here's a simple framework:
1. Identify the problem.
What exactly is wrong?
Don't exaggerate it.
Don't make assumptions.
Describe the situation objectively.
2. Generate alternatives.
What are your possible options?
Don't settle for the first solution that comes to mind.
Think.
Explore.
Create alternatives.
3. Anticipate the consequences.
For every option, ask:
What are the pros?
What are the cons?
How does this affect me?
How does it affect others?
What happens in the short term?
What happens in the long term?
4. Choose a solution.
You won't always find the perfect answer.
You just need to choose the best option available with the information you have.
Then…
Make the decision.
5. Take action.
A solution that never becomes an action isn't a solution.
Move.
Test it.
Learn from it.
Adjust if necessary.
This is what emotional maturity looks like.
Not never feeling angry.
Not never feeling afraid.
Not always staying calm.
It's being able to feel the emotion without letting the emotion make the decision for you.
You can't control the weather.
You can't control other people's opinions.
You can't control what already happened.
You can't control every outcome.
But you can control how you respond.
And that is where your power lives.
So the next time something goes wrong, don't immediately ask:
“Why is this happening to me?”
Ask:
“Is this in my control?”
If not…
Accept it. Let it go. Refocus.
If yes…
Define it. Explore it. Evaluate it. Decide. Act.
You don't need control over everything.
You just need to stop giving your energy to what you cannot control…
and start using it to change what you can.
That's how you take your power back.
